Last week you may have noticed I was a bit MIA. This is because James and I packed up his little car (which is much smaller than you expect once we stuffed it with all our belongings!) and headed down to Devon/Cornwall. We stayed in a luxury lodge near Bude. This way we could see things in both Cornwall and Devon!

Choosing a selfcatering option was fantastic, as we could eat as and when we wanted and was also much easier for me. I was ready for packing picnic's everyday to make sure that there was plenty for me to eat, but surprisingly this was not needed!

I won't go through day by day what I ate, as this will bore you all to death, but I will show you some of my highlights!

When we first got to the lodge, we had paid for a hamper to be provided as it was Sunday and we knew not many shops would be open. Although I couldn't eat some of the items provided, there was a vast range of food in the hamper, from bread, cereals, juice, milk, bacon, sausage, biscuits, cakes, jams, sugar, coffee, tea, crisps, and that's just to name a few!

If you follow me on Instgram you will have seen some of these already. My life revolves around food, not just online! So you bet when I find some good food I am always the one taking a photo of it!

Tuesday was our first day out, as Monday we unpacked and did some food shopping, as the shops were so far away this took a day in itself. We decided to go to Dartington Crystal factory. Here we got to see some vases being made and there was a HUGE store to browse, there was a few sneaky purchases of some very reduced vases! We decided to stop by the cafe there rather than hunting another restaurant or cafe. I had a tuna and cheese jacket potato with a side salad, the potato was baked perfectly and honestly was one of the best baked potatoes I have had in a while. But to follow I had a gluten free carrot cake, yep, that's right, they had a whole fresh cake that was gluten free. Although I knew I would be so full after that and a potato, I just had to try it! It was fantastic!

Wednesday - We found a little cafe in Clovelly which had a wide range of gluten free options, from rolls to cream tea. Of course I had a cream tea with a green tea! The two scones were huge so I only managed one. Slightly more crumbly than a typical scone, but I had plenty of cream and jam to keep it stuck together! I could have had rolls too if I'd wanted. I was very impressed from a small independent cafe.

Thursday - We decided to visit Boscastle which was a lovely village filled with all sorts of craft shops, completely up my ally! We found a cafe which sold gluten free pasties and the chips were made with local potatoes, so we decided to give them a go! I went for a cheese and onion pasty, the filling and the puffier pastry was great. Although I did leave the crusts as they were a little tough! It was nice that it felt like James and I were enjoying the same meal again whilst eating out.

Friday - We went on a garden centre hunting trip and had coffee. We then went home and had some BFree fajitas for lunch as we would be out on saturday and needed to use some chicken up. We then went to Padstow and found Rick Steins fish and chip shop, where gluten free fish is readily available! Unfortunately I was still quite full so we shared some chips but so many people were ordering gluten free, so they had to be good!

I hope you liked this slightly different what I ate post!

I'm back for another what I eat in a day! Today was a pretty average day so sorry if it is a little boring!

Breakfast
Today I had a Genius Pain au Chocolat which is one of my favourite 'treat' breakfasts. The pack I recently brought were much fluffier in texture than past packs I've had so it was even better than usual! Find my review here

Lunch
For lunch I had a basic salad with cucumber, iceberg lettuce, celery and some cheese, quick and simple to eat at work! It packs well and is still crisp when it comes to be eaten.

Dinner
Tonight dinner was quite simple and consisted of a pre cooked chicken breast, mash,  some veg and a whole lot of salad cream as I have been loving it lately! I also had a glass of apple tango! (sorry for the bad iPhone snap!)

I drank 2L of water over the course of the day and there may have been a sneaky cream egg too!

I often speak of products which I have brought or made but I have yet to speak about eating out (other than lunch), and as we all know eating out is not always so easy.

Today I want to talk about Beefeater, We have dozens of Beefeaters around us, which are owned by Whitbread so I assume Table Table and Brewers Fayre will be very similar as I believe both of these are part of the Whitbread Family as well!

Beefeater is where I feel the safest when eating out to date, they have more options than most restaurants and you know what to expect!

What I tend to eat:

Starters:
  • Tomato Soup (excluding the bread)
  • Prawn Cocktail (excluding the bread and sauce)
Mains:
  • Steaks
  • Paprika Chicken
  • Plain Chicken
  • Salads
Dessert:
  • Lemon Sundaes
The allergy advice used to be really easy to find, however it is now a nightmare since the change of their website design, so you can find a copy of the information HERE

Staff are also very helpful, for example many burgers it's only the bun that is a gluten product and Sundaes sometimes have brownie etc which when you ask they will be more than happy to adjust or offer an alternative, opening up more options!

To date I have not been unwell at a Beefeater (other than times it was my own fault) so I feel that their chefs are very careful which makes me much more comfortable and relaxed as I know contamination risk is very very low.

Overal I feel that Beefeater is a good option, particularly if you are out where you don't know the area  as you can guarantee its a safe option. Also the staff never make you feel like you are being awkward when you ask them to taylor a dish to your needs and for this alone Beefeater makes me very happy!

If you have places you enjoy eating out, I'd love to know!

Back on a crisp theme today! I did tell you I was obsessed!

These are Hummus and Pita Chips from Wellaby's and I found these at the free from show. I have tried a bag of chip from this brand before and really did not enjoy them.

But I believe you should give second chances particularly as I have found that gluten free products are hard to get right and this could mean I'm missing out on something good just because I've had one bad experience.

I have one hit and one miss as far as I am concerned. But I think it is more the taste than the texture that I don't enjoy.

Hummus Chips - Kalamata Olives
Starting with the miss as I want to leave on a positive! These chips have a lovely crispy crunch and slightly saltiness which compliments the olives. But I just do not enjoy these, I really thought I would as I love olives but I do not like the aftertaste, it's not a unpleasnt taste, just not to my palette. The texture is great and I will try them dipped into something to see if that makes them more enjoyable. But I just don't think these are for me.

Pita Chips - Italian Herb
Now these are amazing! They are flavoured with the right amount of herbs, as they do not overpower the taste of the actual chip. They have a fresh crunch to them and I think they would also be good with a salsa!

These chips are 95 calories a bag and are gluten free, wheat free, MSG free, Non GMO and nut free! That is a whole lot of free! I got theses 4 for £1 at the show but I know they can be found in Sainsbury's and Amazon.

Pros:

  • Good on the go bags
  • Under 100 calories for a snack
  • The Italian herbs is a great flavour!
  • They cater to many allergies
Cons:
  • Not all flavours were to my taste
  • They are hard to find in shops

If anyone has had some good chips recently? I would love to know!
