The new Morrisons Free From range hit my store recently and I just couldn't wait to try the curly fries as soon as I got them home! I decided to have an American themed evening with Pulled BBQ chicken, homemade coleslaw and curly fries.
In terms of the pulled chicken, all I do is pop two chicken breasts in the slow cooker for 5 hours on low. I then shred the chicken and pop it back in the slow cooker with the BBQ sauce before mixing it together and heating it for another half hour on low.
The coleslaw is just as simple. Grate two medium carrots and shred a couple of white cabbage leaves and a small onion, place in a bowl and mix with two heaped tablespoons of mayonnaise, a teaspoon of mustard and a slash of lemon juice.
I then added the curly fries to the dish, and it was complete! The fries are seasoned well but are not overwhelming, they crisp well when baked in the oven and taste exactly how I remember curly fries, just without the gluten! For only £1 for 600g I thought this was also very reasonable for a gluten free labeled product.
A portion of 125g contains 315 calories so these are certainly a treat! But I was surprised how many fries you actually got for 125g. It was a good sized portion and more than I would normally cook for myself. I would certainly buy these again and I think they are perfect for children too as the seasoning isn't too strong for younger tastebuds, making them great for not only dinners but parties and hot buffets too! At this low price point, you can feed these to the whole family or party without breaking the bank either! And nobody feels left out.
I would love to know if you have tried any of the Free From range in Morrisons and what you have thought about it!

Morrisons Gluten Free Haul
My local Morrisons had a refit recently and with that came a whole free from aisle, including a fridge and a freezer! From Jus Rol pastry to garlic bread and packet mixes, they now have it all! I previously found that Morrisons were the weakest for free from foods in my area (although their choc chip cookies have always been to die for!). But now I would say that they are even better than Ocado!
Here's what I got!
Schar Chicken Kiev - £2.97
I have tried the Rule of Crumb ones before so we decided to pick these ones up to see how they compare!
Morrisons Free From Hash Brown Bites - £1
I know most hash browns are gluten free anyway, but bite sized anything is always fun and for £1, I didn't think they were bad value for money for the size of the bag!
Morrisons Free From Curly Fries - £1
These are the product I am most excited about! I used to love curly fries and I've yet to find any gluten free ones!
Schar Pain au Chocolat - £3
I have yet to try these either and as you get 4 in a bag for £3 I thought that they were better value than the Genius ones, so hopefully they taste as good!
Richmond Gluten Free Sausage - £2
Richmond used to be one of my favourite brands of sausage as they are so versatile as they have no strong seasoning, so when I saw they started doing gluten free ones and that the pack was reduced to £1.60, I just had to get a pack for the freezer!
Genius White Toastie Bread - £2.70
I have had this loaf many times before, it is perfect for a bacon sandwich, toast or creating finger sandwiches on an afternoon tea.
Genius Breakfast Bakes - £1.94
This is the latest product release from Genius. I love breakfast bites as a snack so I thought I would give the chocolate ones a go!
Bannisters Farm Potato skins - £1 per pack
We love these as a quick lunch so when they were on offer I just had to get a couple of packs.
Unfortunately I really wanted to try the Schar burger buns, but they had sold out!

Rule of Crumb Friday Fakeaway - Fish and Chips
It is not a secret that I absolutely love Rule of Crumb. I find the quality of their food exceptional and my fiancé will happily eat all of their food and not complain that it's gluten free, in fact their goujons are his favourite regardless of gluten or not!
I was fancying a takeaway on Friday, but with no chips shops near me doing gluten free on Fridays, I thought I'd just make it at home from what I have in the freezer. I had bought the Rule of Crumb fish fingers from Ocado a couple of weeks back so I thought I'd give them a go!
Retailing at £2.75, you receive 10 in a box which I found to be great because although the quality of the Rule of Crumb products are by far the best, not just for gluten free, this can increase the price making them a more occasional treat. Having a lower price point than other free from fish fingers but a larger quantity, these fish fingers are very competitive in the free from fish finger market. These are a great option if you want to try the quality of Rule of Crumb but are usually put off by the higher prices.
Cooked in the oven for 25 minutes, these fish fingers crisp up perfectly and are golden and very succulent. The cod inside is very flakey and moist. I have tried many gluten free fish fingers and in comparison I feel the fish content in these is much higher than the others. Three fish fingers are only about 165 calories too so are perfect for adults and children alike and I found this to be quite a good portion size!
Paired with mushy peas, chips and ketchup I found I had created the perfect fake-away, without breaking the bank too! James thinks they would be perfect as a fish finger sandwich too!

Jus Rol Gluten Free Puff Pastry Chicken Pie
Feeding men is hard work! Salmon and salad doesn't always seem to cut it! Pie, mash and gravy is one of James' favourite meals so I thought I would try cooking something a little different to see if he would enjoy it. I decided to make a chicken pie, without gravy and instead I opted for a creamy sauce with mushrooms and onions.
Decant into a pie dish and place the puff pastry on top. Being pre-rolled this takes two minutes. Cut a hole in the top of the pie for air to escape and glaze with milk.
This pie serves 4 people and is a great winter warmer in this cold weather! It is quite a quick meal too, which is always good in my eyes because unless you have the whole day, sometimes you want to just create something quick, healthy and filling!
- Jus Rol Gluten Free Puff Pastry
- 1 Red Onion
- 1 Tin of Mushrooms
- 2-3 Cooked Chicken Breasts (these can be left overs or cooked the day before)
- Flour
- 1 Cup of Chicken Stock
- 1/2 Cup Milk
- Butter
Chop the onion and place in a pan with the tin of mushrooms (drained) and butter to sauté. Once softened, add the chicken and then put in enough flour to just lightly coat everything.
Add the cup of chicken stock and milk and cook until the sauce thickens slightly. I tend to put it on a mid heat for 5 minutes.
Put in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
Serve with veg and mash (or just veg in my case!)

1 2 3 Gluten Free Banana Pan Bars
Is it just me who always gets a couple of bananas left at the bottom of the fruit bowl which start to look a bit sorry for themselves? It doesn't matter how many or few I seem to buy, I never eat bananas quick enough. Being someone who hates waste, I decided to come up with something so that I did not waste them this time. This is when the 123 Gluten Free Pan Cake mix from Make it Gluten Free Ltd came to mind!
This spiced cake mix is intended to be created to a flavouring of your choice, whether that is carrot, courgette, apple or any other fruit/veg, this mix will make almost any cake! Of course I thought this would be perfect for my bananas!
For this mix all I needed was mashed banana, an egg, oil and water. There is a couple of advised recipes on the back of the box and which recipes work best for which substitutes, so if you take a look you should find advice on the fruit/veg that you choose!
This cake took about 30-40 minutes to bake in the oven and I just made sure it was golden brown. After letting the cake cool for a few minutes, I took a couple of slices out to try. Like most oil based cakes I found that it was very moist. I did think the combination of banana and oil may create a stodgy consistency when baked but thankfully it didn't, in fact the cake was very fluffy! I also found that the flavours of the cinnamon in the mix and banana worked well together, they were even and there wasn't one that overpowered the other, it was a good even bake!
You can purchase this mix from the Make it Gluten Free website for £3.50 and it makes a huge batch so I think it is fantastic value and so versatile to have in the cupboard just in case!
I would love to know if you have used this mix with anything else and how it turned out!

Warburtons Newburn Bakehouse #CrumpetChallenge - Crumpet Cream Tea
If you asked me what reminds me most of summers in my childhood, I would have to say visiting a National Trust House or Gardens and my grandparents ordering a cream tea in the cafe. They were often so huge that we shared one between the three of us! Raspberry jam, although not conventional, is my favourite jam to have with a cream tea, mainly because I can't always eat strawberry's, but also because I like the crunch of the pips!
Seeing the Raspberry and Vanilla Jam in my
hamper brought back those memories as I tend to associate vanilla with a creamy
taste, so I thought it would go perfect with a bit of clotted cream and I just
had to try it on the crumpets!
So,
I very simply toasted the crumpets for a couple of minutes and served them with
the Hawkshead Relish Company's Raspberry and Vanilla Jam and some Clotted
cream. Perfect for a late lunch or evening tea after a Sunday Roast!
I personally thought that the crumpets worked as a fantastic replacement for a scone! Gluten free scones can be very dry and crumbly, whereas the crumpets are not,
which means half your jam and cream doesn't end up covering you as parts of the
scone fall apart!
I
made this for myself and James and when I presented it to James he wasn't too
sure of the idea of a cream tea without a scone. Nevertheless, he gave it a go
and thoroughly enjoyed it! Even the gluten free crumpet and he is a gluten
lover, much to my despair! So, to get a super positive reaction from him is
really great!
I
would love to know if you try this and what you think!

My Warburtons Newburn Bakehouse #CrumpetChallenge Hamper*
On Monday I received a very exciting package from Newburn bakehouse inviting me to partake in their #Crumpetchallenge this February! When they reached out saying they were sending a hamper to me to get creative with their crumpets, I just couldn't wait to see what would be inside and what I could create out of it!
When I opened the package it was all in a lovely wicker basket and I found lots of lovely goodies! Here's what was in my hamper!
Of course the foremost item in this box was a pack of the gluten free crumpets! There was also a voucher to get another pack so they don't expire, an avocado and a banana!
The next thing that caught my attention was a raspberry and vanilla jam from the Hawkshead Relish Company, which in all honestly sounds like something I would eat straight from the jar! I love raspberry jams and vanilla flavoured anything so I think this would be perfect for me! There was also a lemon curd inside the hamper which is also one of my favourite preserves. James loves lemon curd too so I am sure he will have a few ideas for this!
There is also a sun-dried tomato paste by Epicure. Crumpet pizzas come to mind straight away with this but I am also going to try and find something a bit different to do with it too!
The last and if not the best item was the hand stamped butter knife. I actually have a small collection of hand stamped spoons and items as a lady who lives near my parents does it! She even made me 'I Can't Say I Do Without You' keyring's with our wedding date for my bridal party crackers. This extra gift is completely me and I love it so much!
Thank you Warburtons Newburn Bakehouse for such a lovely hamper and I can't wait to share the ideas I create over the next few weeks!
